PRE-CONFERENCE SEMINARS

A Legislative Symposium – Communicating with and Influencing Legislative Staff

The Symposium is designed to equip financial aid administrators with the skills to deal effectively with members of the Legislature and their staff.  Participants will hear from individuals who have worked both the Democratic and Republican sides of the aisle, as well as an introduction to the SASFAA Legislative Guide and a limited amount of role play.  SASFAA members who want to maximize their Capitol Hill visits will want to attend this special pre-conference event.

Financial Management Issues for Treasurers of State Associations

The purpose of the workshop is to provide an understanding of the complex financial responsibilities of state association treasurers. The challenges for individuals in these positions are frequently beyond the scope of any formal training or other experiences.  This workshop will provide instruction on different methods to help prevent and resolve potential problems.  Topics such as federal and state tax responsibilities, insurance, investments, budgets, and audits will be discussed.   A portion of the workshop will be devoted to a discussion of reducing the potential for fraud or misappropriation of association funds.

Who Should Attend:
Association treasurers/treasurer-elects are the primary target audience for this workshop. However, individuals who are potentially interested in serving as a state treasurer may also find this workshop beneficial.

Trainer:
This workshop will be taught by Dave Cecil.  Dave is Director of Financial Aid at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky.  Regionally he served as president of SASFAA and was SASFAA Treasurer for four years.  Dave has received the SASFAA Distinguished Service Award, as well as similar awards from NASFAA and his state association.
