Treasurer’s Report Report From the Treasurer The fiscal year started well for SASFAA. Sonja McMullen and Lester McKenzie had a smooth transition. They successfully closed the SASFAA accounts with SunTrust and opened new ones with Bank of America. It was necessary to make this move so the treasurer could work with a local branch office in dealing with the day-to-day SASFAA money business. SunTrust did not have a branch in Banner Elk, NC, but the treasurer expects to have a great relationship with Bank of America. The Board decided to keep monetary assets (CDs, etc.) with SunTrust. This will allow the association to maintain the great relationship Jane McNaughton has had with the current advisors giving SASFAA the stability of diversity. McKenzie has reinstated online banking for SASFAA. This will save some money in postage, but the greatest benefit is the quick turnaround in getting payments to members. Jane McNaughton and Lester McKenzie met with Anne Rochester, accountant, and she is currently working on the SASFAA tax return. Plans are to have this completed by the November federal deadline, and Jane will report its status at the SASFAA board meeting in February. She will also be reporting on the audit which has yet to be finalized, but tentative plans are to have this scheduled and completed prior to the end of the calendar years. SASFAA memberships are coming in fast and furious. Forrest Stuart and the treasurer are in constant contact making sure the numbers match with each other. Both individuals are looking forward to changes in the Web site that will make this membership process easier for everyone involved. An updated copy of the 2003-2004 budget is available online at www.sasfaa.org. Click on the 2003-2004 budget link. The treasurer looks forward to a prosperous and fulfilling term. He notes that the role of treasurer is a collaborative one and is eager to work with membership over the next two years. He notes, "This is a most important relationship and I am honored in the trust you have given me." |
Membership Committee The 2003-2004 SASFAA membership drive is well underway. As of September 23, 2003, SASFAA has 478 members. The 2002-2003 membership was over 1,200. A lot of this lost ground in memberships will be recovered closer to the annual conference, February 2004, as many do not renew their membership until they also register for the conference. The Membership Committee chair notes that he is quickly making progress towards the online membership database. An exciting change and benefit that will accrue with the membership (see Erik Melis’ report as chair of Electronic Services) will be the ability to view current membership status and to make online changes to one’s own personal data. The result will be that the association will maintain the highest data integrity possible. A lot more information will be forthcoming as the new Web site is introduced and becomes functional. The importance of individual membership cannot be emphasized enough. When asked, SASFAA members respond that their SASFAA colleagues are the most beneficial part of membership. If you supervise financial aid professionals, please make membership in SASFAA available to your staff. Encourage new staff to become involved and to forge new professional relationships that will foster success in our service-oriented business. For those who have been SASFAA members for some time, introduce yourself to new members. Encourage new FAAs in your state to also join SASFAA. Membership growth is a responsibility of each of us. Join today and encourage other to do likewise.
