| Florida State Report Nathan Basford, FASFAA President The 2003-2004 year started out with a “Grand Slam.” The President’s retreat was held at Dodgertown in Vero Beach. “Make Change a Reality” (shake it up) is the them for this year. It is my hope that this theme will establish a strong relationship between us and drive our dedication. I believe that this theme will help us to fuel new ideas, set and strive for our goals and realize much success. The President’s retreat was a success thanks to: Brainstorming sessions Great presentations on team building Support from our sponsors After all the brainstorming and team building activities, the executive board came together and developed the following action items for the year: Enhance our Web site Develop future FAFSAA leaders Develop/expand on fiscal concerns Develop new training sessions Develop/expand our volunteer program Expand on diversity issues I look forward to the new and exciting challenges set before us. It is my hope that you all will encourage each other to become involved and excited, as I feel I have been encouraged by all of YOU. We would love to have members of SASFAA join our association. In doing so please complete the volunteer form on our Web site to fuel the process of new ideas and changes we can make to FASFAA. After all, “There is nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come.” (Victor Hugo) I look forward to an amazing year. Our Fall 2003 Conference is being held in Naples, Florida. The Naples Beach Hotel and Golf Club is the site. I look forward to seeing many of you there.

Kentucky State Report Ronald McMakin, KASFAA President KASFAA held its transition meeting at the Farmington Historic Home in Louisville on June 12. At that time the old and new boards met and exchanged positions and responsibilities. President-elect Ron McMakin talked about the upcoming year and what he would like KASFAA to accomplish. He would like to see training as the main focus of the association. One of the highlights of the day was touring the 1800’s plantation and lunch on the founds. Sullivan University, which has a culinary school, provided lunch. On July 21 the program committee met at the Hilton Greater Cincinnati Airport Hotel where the Fall 2003 Conference will be held. The theme will be “Getting a Clue with KASFAA.” Program Chair Runan Pendergrast and her committee are hoping to have a representative from the NASFAA training staff to present several sessions. On July 22 the Executive Board held their first meeting for the 2003-2004 year. The committee chairs gave a brief talk about what their goals will be for the year. The position for Vice President of Training, which was created last year has been filled by Shelley Park, Director for Financial Aid, Eastern Kentucky University. This one year term position will be responsible for coordinating all training activities for KASFAA. Her committee has already scheduled the NASFAA decentralized training for the week of November 10. Charles Vinson, Director of Financial Aid, Murray State University, will serve as the instructor. The High School Counselor Workshop will be held in November and the Support Staff workshop in December. KASFAA will ask the Governor to declare February as Financial Aid Awareness Month. College Goal Sunday will be held for the fourth year and is scheduled for February 2004. They plan to have 15 workshop sites throughout Kentucky to help students and parents complete the FAFSA.
