Have you ever visited the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute? If not, you will be given an opportunity to do so during the Fall conference in February. Here is how the Institute is described: “The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is a ‘living institution’ which views the lessons of the past a positive way to chart new directions for the future. The Institute has a permanent exhibit that is a self-directed journey through the Birmingham Civil Rights Movement and human rights struggle. Multi-media exhibitions focus on the history of African-American life and the struggle for civil rights. Visitors experience for themselves the drama of this courageous story as it is told in the permanent galleries. Patrons walk through the exciting exhibitions from the era of segregation to the Movement and all of the historic event that took place in Birmingham. The Human Rights Gallery takes the visitor Beyond Birmingham to look at the human issues around the world. The Institute is more than an museum, it is a center for education, research and discussion of human rights issues”. This is a very moving and intense exhibition. It really gives you an opportunity to live through some of the events during that period in our nation’s history. Time has been set-aside in our conference agenda for the membership to visit the Institute on Monday afternoon. The Diversity Committee encourages everyone to take advantage of the opportunity. |
