KHEAA Update
November 2004
Growth in Aid Continues
FY 2004 was a tremendous year in our efforts to make higher education
more accessible. Thanks to the assistance and support of our school
and lender partners, KHEAA disbursed $148 million in need-based grants,
scholarships, and work-study wages (more than double the amount disbursed
in FY 2001) and guaranteed $951 million in Federal Family Education
Loans. Since 1996, KHEAA has waived the insurance premium. Last year
alone, students saved $6.2 million.
For the first quarter of FY 2005 as compared to the same period last
year, KHEAA’s new, school-based loan guarantee volume increased:
-
18% in Kentucky to $259.9 million
-
26% in Alabama to $218.9 million
-
100% in Mississippi to $3.9 million
-
21% in other states to $13.3 million
GoHigherKY.org
Kentucky’s one-stop, higher education and career planning website
was launched October 21 at the Kentucky Counseling Association Conference
in Louisville. Special guest speaker Margaret Causey, a guidance counselor
with 30 years’ experience, discussed how Go Higher can make
counselors’ jobs easier. Causey uses a similar system in the
North Carolina public school system. The site is a collaborative effort
of KHEAA, The Student Loan People, Kentucky Council on Postsecondary
Education (CPE), Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges and
Universities (AIKCU), Kentucky Community and Technical College System
(KCTCS), and Kentucky Department of Education (KDE).
This is the third site involving KHEAA and like-minded state organizations.
The other websites are AlabamaMentor.org
and MississippiMentor.org.
Retrieving MYF Stafford Exit Records for
Schools
ExitExpress is a new service designed by KHEAA especially for the
convenience of our school partners. Through ExitExpress, KHEAA will
retrieve exit data on behalf of schools using Mapping Your Future
(MYF) Stafford exit counseling. Federal regulations require schools
to forward exit counseling reports to guaranty agencies within 60
days of the exit counseling session. Schools using MYF's Online Student
Loan Counseling with loans guaranteed by KHEAA can save time and money
since they won't have to send this data to KHEAA.
NCAN and P-16 Council
KHEAA Executive Director Dr. Joe L. McCormick is now a member of the
National College Access Network (NCAN) Board of Directors and Kentucky's
P-16 Council. NCAN is a private, nonprofit organization with a mission
to improve access to and success in postsecondary education for disadvantaged,
underrepresented, and first-generation students. NCAN supports a network
of state and local college access programs that provide counseling,
advice, and financial assistance; shares best practices among the
network; provides leadership and technical assistance; and helps establish
new college access programs. College access programs are non-profit
organizations designed to increase the number of students who pursue
education beyond high school. The Kentucky P-16 Council was formed
in 1999 by the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE) and
the Kentucky Board of Education to jointly discuss policy matters
that affect the progress of students from P-12 into the postsecondary
education system.
