APRIL 2005

Report from the President-Elect
Guy F. Gibbs

SASFAA and its board members and committee chairs are off to a busy start, and at the writing of this newsletter article, it is still early March. The president-elect has participated in the SASFAA board meeting and in conducting a workshop for the state presidents-elect prior to the annual conference held in February. Since the conference, time has been devoted to identifying SASFAA members to chair committees for 2005-2006. The 2005-2006 Executive Board and committee chairs will be announced soon.

Without the support of the membership and those who volunteer to chair and serve on various committees, the work of SASFAA could not be accomplished. If any members, has an interest in chairing a SASFAA committee or serving SASFAA as an elective officer in the future, there is no better way to get the necessary experience than volunteering your time and expertise now.

The volunteer form for 2005-2006 is available on the SASFAA Web site at www.sasfaa.org and follow the link to On-Line forms. The volunteer form can be printed, completed and returned to:

Guy F. Gibbs, SASFAA President-Elect
Associate Director of Financial Aid
Northern Virginia Community College
Forbes Office Center
Annandale, Virginia 22003-3796

The president-elect will attend the following state association meetings in April and June and will bring greetings from Janet Sain, SASFAA president. State conferences scheduled are TASFAA, NCASFAA, SCASFAA and GASFAA. These conferences precede the Transition Board meeting that will be held in Florida in June. At that time the final board meeting for 2004-2005 will be held. Following the board meeting, the 2004-2005 board and committee chairs will meet for a day with the 2005-2006 board and committee chairs to provide an easy transition and to ensure that SASFAA business is conducted appropriately and in a fiscally responsible manner.

The membership is encouraged to check the SASFAA Web site on a regular basis to find out what is going on in their association. If any member has issues and or concerns that they would like to present to the 2005-2006 board for review and consideration they are encouraged to e-mail Guy Gibbs at ggibbs@nvcc.edu or call 703-323-3085. The president-elect is interested in your views and the direction that you would like to see SASFAA move toward. Remember also that your involvement is encouraged. Don’t wait—fill out the volunteer form and submit it today.

Report from the Treasurer
Lester McKenzie

The conference was a huge success and, from my perspective, one of the best ever. I can’t begin to thank enough those that helped with registration. The folks from GASFAA were great to count on. I joked with some of the board that the only time I was left alone was when I showed up an hour early and thought I had been abandoned. My mistake for setting my watch to Eastern Time and then forgetting that I did it. : )

As my two-year term ends, I look forward to handing over the reigns to Heather Boutell. I know she will be a great Treasurer for this association. Heather and I will be meeting in Asheville, NC during the New Aid Officers Workshop to train and transfer materials. I can’t tell how much I am looking forward to that. The last two years have been fun but any job has its days.

In the coming weeks, I will be processing registrations for the New Aid Officers Workshop in Asheville, NC. This is the first year we are holding registration online. To ensure that you can attend, make sure you complete an online registration. Space is limited.

Lester McKenzie
SASFAA Treasurer
