OCTOBER 2005

State Report from Kentucky
Shelley S. Park, KASFAA President

The KASFAA Transition Board meeting was held May 9-10 at the Embassy Suites in Covington on the Ohio River. Building the 2005-06 KASFAA “team” with elected officers and appointed committee chairs, the association is ready for a winning season. Former team members helped the new player’s transition for the upcoming year, and after association business was conducted, the team attended a Cincinnati Reds game.

Goals for 2005-06
At the Transition Meeting the executive committee discussed and adopted goals for the upcoming year.

  • Implement online voting for Spring 2006 conference.
  • Continue the development of future KASFAA leaders by providing leadership
    opportunities and excellent training.
  • Explore new ways to reach Kentucky students and parents in elementary/middle
schools about early awareness of planning for their student’s educational training
    beyond high school.
  • Complete update of KASFAA policy and procedures.

Fall Conference – Stars, Stripes and the KASFAA Spirit
The fall conference is scheduled for Oct 19-21, 2005 in Louisville at the Downtown Marriott with a patriotic theme. The work we do as Financial Aid Professionals makes us proud to live in a country where we can assist its people with an opportunity to receive an education. During hurricane Katrina, this was especially evident when colleges throughout country opened their classrooms for students wishing to continue their education. Conference Chairs Victoria Owens and Toya Flanagan are working diligently with the program committee to provide an outstanding fall conference with some excellent speakers (some a surprise) and DOE official Kathy Makowski will be presenting the federal update. The new website for KASFAA will be revealed during the conference and humorist Carl Hurley will remind us why humor is essential to working in higher education and a financial aid office.

Training Events
KASFAA will participate in the NASFAA training and has scheduled two instruction dates in October with Cindy Burnett of Western Kentucky University conducting the training. High school counselor training dates and sites have been finalized for November.

College Goal Sunday
KASFAA will conduct its annual College Goal Sunday in Kentucky on January 29, 2006 throughout the state at eleven sites. There is continued work by the GCS committee to increase funding opportunities.
