| Diversity Committee Report “Serving Our Hispanic Population” will be the theme throughout the year for the Diversity Committee. The theme will be evident in all facets of the annual conference. From Salsa Dance lessons immediately after the President’s Reception on Sunday, several interest sessions, a general session speaker to sharing Spanish-translated FA forms; members can gain the knowledge and ability to interact with Hispanic students, parents and staff members and be able to understand the special cultural differences and demands in financial aid with regards to undocumented individuals. In the 2000 census, it was discovered that 25% of all children born in America were Hispanic. Research also shows that almost 60% of Hispanic students choose community colleges when beginning their studies, even while expressing interest in earning a bachelor’s degree. Could this be because Hispanic students do not find or perceive college affordable at four-year institutions? Financial aid applications for Hispanics have been steadily increasing since 1996, yet the percentage of Hispanic students who receive aid has not increased and remains low. Why? Is it because they are afraid to apply? Are they too proud? Do their parents not understand the process, thus they do not pursue financial assistance? We hope to answer these and many other questions. Please join us at the annual conference in Nashville, TN in February 2007. In the meantime, if you have any suggestions, ideas, and/or Spanish financial aid forms that you currently use and would like to share with the membership, please do not hesitate to contact one of the committee members!
