OCTOBER 2006

Tennessee State Report
Janette Overton, TASFAA President

The 2006-07, TASFAA Executive Board Transition Meeting was held June 5-7 at the Montgomery Bell State Park in Dickson, Tennessee. After the final 2005/06 executive board meeting the outgoing and income boards met together to share ideas. Past President Forrest Stuart passed the gavel to the incoming President, Janette Overton. The incoming board spent an afternoon with two representatives from “Adventureworks.” This organization specializes in team building exercises through the use of a ropes course. Each participant learned the importance of working together and being able to handle situations on their own. On day 2, Robert’s Rules of Order was presented to the incoming board by Claude Presnell, President of TICUA. President Overton shared her goals with the board and asked for feedback on the goals she had presented and ideas of goals they had. Her “guiding theme” for the year stems from Ursula K. Le Guin who said, “It is good to have an end to journey towards: but it is the journey that matters in the end.” President Overton is very thankful for the many TASFAA volunteers who will assist in making this year a successful one. Listed below is the 2006-2007 TASFAA Executive Board.

The fall conference, “Journey to Change: New Programs … New Challenges … New Opportunities”, is set for October 22-24 at the Franklin Cool Springs Marriott. This theme was chosen in light of the new federal and state student financial aid programs, and because of recent changes to the TELS regulations. The entire day on Tuesday, October 24, will be dedicated to the U.S. Department of Education (USED) Higher Education Reconciliation Act (HERA) Training.

TASFAA will participate in NASFAA’s Decentralized Training with John Norrell as this year’s trainer. Training will be offered in East TN, Middle TN and West TN. The dates and times are to be arranged. Information regarding these training opportunities will appear on the TASFAA Web site at a later date.
