Preventing Food Insecurity in College Students

Did you know?

- 25% of community college students and 20% of four-year college students have very low food security
- 56% of first-generation students are food insecure
-10% of community college students and 6% of university students have reported that they have gone a whole day without food over a month's time
-The College and University Food Bank Alliance had 15 member institutions in 2012. Today, that number has increased to over 600 institutions.
- Hunger and food insecurity in college students can impact their academic performance, leading to increased issues with maintaining Satisfactory Academic Progress, and on-time graduation rates

This year's charity is focused on assisting three campus-based food pantries: Mimi's Pantry (located in Atlanta, GA), which serves Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, and Spelman College; Coastal Carolina University's food pantry; and, Horry-Georgetown Technical College (both located in Conway, SC).

Monetary donations received through SASFAA's charity efforts will be split between Coastal Carolina University and Horry-Georgetown Technical College, as both institutions' campus food pantries are in need of donations to replenish their stock after the devastating effects of Hurricane Florence in September 2018.

In addition, you can provide support by donating non-perishable food items on site during the SASFAA conference! All donations received will be distributed to Mimi's Pantry in Atlanta. Mimi's Pantry serves the needs of college students attending Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, and Spelman College. Mimi's Pantry has identified the following as high-need staple items:

  • Tuna
  • Mayonnaise
  • Sweet relish
  • Spaghetti sauce
  • Pasta
  • Shelf milk
  • Individual boxes of cereal/packets of grits and oatmeal
  • Oranges
  • Apples
  • Canned chili
  • Black beans
  • Peanut butter
  • Jelly
  • Individual packets of microwaveable rice

Your donations, whether monetary or donations of food items, will directly assist college students who face food insecurity on a daily basis.
Thank you for your consideration!
