“Embracing Economic Diversity in Higher Education”
How do we create safe spaces for students, faculty, and staff to disclose and discuss issues of class?
As Financial Aid Administrators, we welcome students of promise from every background. Our institutions celebrate diversity, and while we often focus on issues of racial/ethnic diversity, political diversity, gender diversity, and sexual orientation diversity, we often do not talk about economic diversity. In this session, we will address the issue of economic diversity or class. We will look at research which shows the benefit of having an institution that offers economic diversity, look at some ways in which we might unintentionally send a message that class matters, and examine some strategies to embrace economic diversity in our institutions.
