SASFAA Webinar Series
Synthetic Fraud
Description:
Unfortunately, financial aid fraud is spreading faster than ever, becoming more organized, sophisticated, and audacious. A recent alert from SASFAA reported a large-scale, coordinated fraud ring that exploited weaknesses in admissions and financial aid processes. “One school in particular noted over 1,700 fraudulent admissions applications, accompanied by nearly 400 valid ISIRs for these fraudulent students. It was noted that the high school transcripts for these fraudulent students were obtained both from Parchment and directly from the individual high schools. Almost all of the FAFSA applications were completed as independent students, to reduce the amount of information needed to produce a valid ISIR.” This webinar session will unpack how this scheme operated, the red flags that were missed, and the systemic vulnerabilities it exposed. Attendees will gain practical strategies and prevention steps to detect and disrupt similar fraud attempts before they impact their campus.
