Southern Association of Student
 Financial Aid Administrators

The Southern Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (SASFAA) is an organization of over 1,200 financial aid professionals working within the nine southern states – Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia – whose purpose is to promote the professional preparation of individuals within financial aid; to develop effective programs related to student financial aid; to facilitate communication between all interested parties within the financial aid community; and to continually evaluate and update our services.

A Message from the President

Dear SASFAA Members and Friends:

I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as your SASFAA president.

In choosing a theme for this year, I looked back at SASFAA’s 50-year history of providing training for financial aid professionals, for new aid officers, for our mid-level staff, and for our future association leaders.  All of these training opportunities by SASFAA are afforded so we can empower our students and their families achieve their educational dreams at our great institutions of learning.

Thus the theme: “Uncovering Your Purpose, Power, and Passion.”

You may ask, “How can we do this?”  I believe we can do this through the following precept: Lead with purpose.

Leading with purpose begins with intention, and intention clarifies why we do, what we do.

Ask yourself these questions throughout the year:  Why do I do what I do?  Does it stir my heart?  Is it honest?  Is it ethical?  Will it make the world a better place?

Once you begin answering these questions, you will see that we, as financial aid professionals, must uncover our purpose, power, and passion on a daily basis.

I commit to you that I will continue to be a servant-leader with a vision, with heart, with integrity, with discipline, with grace, and with spirit.

Putting all this together provides a recipe for success for SASFAA!

I look forward to an exciting year, and I look forward to seeing all of you as I visit your state conferences.

I would like to close with this quote from anthropologist Margaret Mead:

“Never doubt a small group of committed people can change the word.  Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

I welcome your comments and feedback during the coming year.

Your SASFAA president,

Nathan Basford
