Session Description:
Since it is the start of the new Year and it is the official start to the “Better FAFSA, Better Future,” this presentation will help us with a New Year’s resolution. As a professionally educated and trained teacher and experienced financial aid professional with Federal Pell Grant expertise, Beth will help us resolve in this New Year to “Do This” new Pell regulation, “Not That” old one using snippets of techniques from the various self-help book series: Do This, Not That.
Presenters:
Beth Mekus, University of Kentucky
Beth began at University of Kentucky’s Student Financial Aid and Scholarships Office as a Federal Work Study student before graduating in 2012 with a degree in elementary education. With a teaching job offer on the table, she rerouted her plan to stay on at UK, and has worked there since, both as a financial aid counselor and now as the Federal Grants and Withdrawals Coordinator. In line with these interests, she enjoys volunteering with KASFAA, attending any financial aid training offered, and throwing epic office parties! With KASFAA, Beth has served on the Training Committee as the High School Counselor Workshop Coordinator, Support Staff Training Coordinator, and the New Aid Officer Workshop Coordinator. She has also served as the Membership Chair, the Program Committee Chair, and is currently the Four-Year Public-Sector Representative. This is Beth’s first-time volunteering with SASFAA, and she hopes for many more opportunities in the future! Outside of financial aid, Beth volunteers with UK’s Community Hearing Board and serves as a Fayette Co. Election Official. She enjoys reading, playing cozy video games, and spending time with her husband, 2 daughters, and 3 fur-kids.
